Science Fair - 2013

Zoe and Mia, you signed up for the Ashlawn science fair again this year. The notice to sign up comes home in late Fall and the Fair is a couple of months later. That is a long couple of months with science fair parts and papers on the kitchen counter, but it's well worth it.


You agreed on a project idea: can people tell what an object is without being able to see it. And then you set about figuring out how to test it. You decided to blind fold 10 people and hand them various objects and see if they could tell what they were. You were impressed with how some people tried to smell the objects and ask if they could taste them to help them figure it out. (No tasting was allowed though. You didn't want people to put a whole orange or piece of dried pasta in their mouth - yuck.) Zoe made a tally sheet to figure out the results and then hand pecked out the keys on the computer to type up the information for the display board. My favorite part was your conclusion. You wrote: Our senses are good. If you are blind you can still live happily because you can hear stuff, touch stuff and smell stuff.

Zoe selected blue as the color for the background paper and colored the title signs. Mia selected the demonstration pictures and the yellow papers and fabric. You took turns with all the gluing. On the bottom of the display board, daddy cut out two holes and you taped a piece of fabric over them.  Guests to your display got to try the experiment by reaching through the holes and seeing if they could tell what was in the bowls behind them. You had picked out several items for them to try, and two of those options were hershey's kisses and lollipops which made the display very popular.

I know I've posted about this before, but I just think it's so special, I'll likely keep sharing pictures. Here's Zoe reading to Humphrey. He's the dog that made a surprise visit on her birthday. Mia is just out of the camera view.

Friends

Scott has some excellent friends that we've known since college. Two of them came up to visit to celebrate his birthday. You'd never know these pictures (except one) were taken before 7AM. It's no wonder that the kids still ask for them almost daily. So much fun.

The early morning play session above is all the more impressive after the late night play session that occurred the evening before.
