Snowy weekend

Six inches of snow goes a long way towards a fun day! Here are a few shots from the weekend.

Of course, snow angels...
A slide full of snow is a great way to have fun and get a wet bottom...

Snow is cold without gloves!!! Wish I had a recording going to capture the shrieks that resulted after Mia plunged her hands in the snow.
A little dress up time inside to warm up afterwards...

I really want to/can read!

Zoe has been really focused on language and reading lately. She desperately wants to read. For some time now, she's been "reading" books to me and Mia and anyone else who will listen. This means that she picks up a book and either recites it from memory or tells a story based on the pictures.

Today, however, she began sounding out words from a kids menu we had, and she had some success. In Montessori school, the kids are taught how the letters sound and they pronounce them that way, as in "ah" instead of "a". She was able to sound out several words from sight including "fun" and "foot".

She was so excited and kept exclaiming "I can read!" Her goal is to completely master reading before she returns to school tomorrow. Good luck Zo!

Mia - Family Birthday Party

We had a family birthday party at home to celebrate Mia's big "2"! A little cake, a few presents, and lots of fun blowing out candles.

It didn't help that I accidentally put trick candles in her cake (the kind that keep relighting on their own after having been blown out). It did keep the action going though.
Mia, you were a much more polite eater than I could have possibly imagined.

Just a few smudges of the strawberry sauce topping on your dress. It blends.

Big Bed Victory and Great Grandpa Milton

Good news! Mia and Zoe were able to fall asleep in the same room today at nap time. That is a major victory considering that until now they haven't been able to resist sitting up and peeking at each other indefinitely.

Sad news. Great grandpa Milton, we hope that your surgery tomorrow goes without a hitch and that you're back on your feet and pain-free very, very soon!

Mia - 2 Years Old

This was the month of sock puppets. Rarely a day went by when you didn't insist on wearing a sock on your hand. If we forgot to bring an extra sock with us, you immediately stripped off your shoes and socks, and put a sock on your hand. Sometimes you even replaced your shoes which was an unexpected bonus. I can't count how many sock casualties we've had this month.

One of my favorite sounds is your singing. When we are in the car, you'll sometimes sing The Farmer in the Dell, and while washing your hands, you'll often sing the A, B, C song or the Happy Birthday song because that's what we use to estimate how long to wash our hands. On your birthday, you wanted to call people so that they could sing to you or so you could sing Happy Birthday to them. You also have clear preferences for songs and versions of the same song. I wish I could capture your voice.

You've been enjoying swimming and gymnastics as well as music this month. You also like the programs at the nature center and like the art projects that you do there.

Over the holidays, we made a mountain (almost literally) of zucchini and banana bread. I suppose we would have made even more if my proficient helpers weren't so proficient at helping themselves.

We celebrated New Years Eve in style, and you had a great time blowing horns and wearing a tiara. In this photo, you are actually not blowing a horn, however, but tasting a globe toy - yum.
Here's a horn photo though.

You are still experimenting with the potty this month and very eager to use it. You also like to ask for privacy when you're in the bathroom. It's not uncommon to hear you chirp "privacy please" while you totter forward to try to reach and shut the door while you're on the toilet. So far, you have only fallen off once that I know of trying to reach the door from that position. This would all be far cuter by the way if you routinely had to use the bathroom when you asked to be taken to the toilet. Instead, at least half the time, you are just looking for a field trip, and you know it's one we won't pass up if you ask.

Your crib looks so empty! It's a very strange feeling to walk by at night and not see you in it. You just moved in to a twin bed in the same room with Zoe last night. Now, we just need to keep you in it. I need to start sleeping with a camera under my pillow so I can quickly catch a photo of you appearing in my doorway at 1 am. Although, I'm trusting that in a week's time, you'll opt to stay in bed and not wander the halls - right sweetie?

You grew in so many ways this year Mia. Dad and I were surprised to see that you were at the 97% for height for your age and about the mid-mark for both weight and head circumference. When did you sprout? You now piece together short sentences and more complex thoughts too.

You continue to have a generally happy and active temperament. You showed little reaction to getting a shot at the pediatrician because you were so happy to receive a band-aid sticker as compensation. With so much change (e.g., move to a big bed, potty training, birthday planning, new baby planning, new car, etc.) you've been such a trooper.

You and Zoe have so much fun. When I'm trying to finish a meal or get you two in bed, I have to remind myself to let you have your giggle fits and play time and not rush through an activity. When you can't communicate as clearly as you want, Zoe helps you out by starting to speak in gibberish and then you both gibber away in constant giggles.

Happy, happy birthday Mia! Love you!

Mom

First Night

Tonight, on the eve of your 2nd birthday, you spent the first night in a big bed Mia. Not only that, but it was also the first night that you and Zoe shared a room together.

We were off to a dicey start. We tried having you two sleep in the room together at nap time today and that was a total failure. Not worth discussing and spoiling the success of tonight. And then, after a more than disgusting bath time experience (also not worth discussing and spoiling the success of bed time), you two were incredibly wound up and unbelievably excited.

Dad and I didn't help set the tone much as we were banging around doing laundry (required based on unstated events of the evening), starting the dish washer (also required), making your birthday cake which required both the loud mixer and the blender, and getting some items ready to sell in the room adjacent to yours (not required but a relief). And then, finally, I couldn't resist but sneak in to your room to take a photo with flash to document the event.

You two were so delighted to share a room together. After nap time, when Mia had ended up back in her crib, she woke up crying wanting to be in her bed with Zoe. I hope you two share many cuddly moments in this room.

Great Grandpa Milton

Great-grandpa Milton Frost and Lena Frost

Your Great-grandpa Milton turns 95 in June. And, like his mom Ganny before him, he is an inspiration for embracing life. Ganny was building new relationships, starting new crafts, and always having new experiences and staying engaged with life in to her centennial year.

Great-grandpa goes to work every day. He drives (safely). He remarried Lena after your Great-grandma Ann died several years ago. He commutes between his apartment, his store, and Lena's apartment every day. He regularly eats out and enjoys good food. He stays current on the news of the day and loves a good debate. He can also tell a wicked joke.

Thanks for a happy visit this past weekend Great-grandpa. I was so glad to see you and spend time together.

Love,

Laurie

Storytime for Mia

I have no cute photo or video to capture this, but I don't want to forget it.

Each night, Mia and I have storytime before bed. She cuddles up with her Grandma Barbara blanket after picking out a few books and then we read. She has started adding two new things which I think are charming.

First, when I lean forward in the chair to reach for the books, she starts patting my back and saying "sit back mommy, sit here mommy." Then, with each book, after I read the title and the author, she repeats the authors name. What is so cute about it is the sing-song inflection in her voice which I wish I could just bottle. My favorite is when we're reading a Maisy book and she says "Lucy Cousins" (the author). It's such a sweet sound.

Happy New Year 2010

When we began to explain New Years Eve and New Years Day celebrations to Zoe a few weeks ago, we talked about all the ways people celebrate and how they look at the year that's passed and consider how they hope the year ahead goes for them. We also talked about how Scott and I have celebrated at home with a nice dinner the past few years since she was born.

That apparently lit some spark for her, and she announced that she'd like to go to a restaurant and have a "Fancy Nancy" dinner as a family. (For those who don't know "Fancy Nancy", she's a character in a book that dresses up elaborately and uses fancy words like parfait instead of ice cream sundae.)

Scott and I were initially not keen on the idea of being in a restaurant on New Years Eve with the kiddos, but then I remembered a restaurant that seems quite fancy, and has some very kid friendly items. Their New Years events didn't begin until 8 pm, so we were able to make a 6:30 pm reservation.

I put together a small bag of New Years fun stuff to bring to the restaurant, we all dressed up very fancy and went out.

First, we went to the Willard Hotel (very, very fancy), where they have holiday music by a choir and pianist from 5:30-7:30 each night during the holidays. We listened to them sing and play for a while and then walked a block to our restaurant.

We all ate a great dinner, shared a fun dessert, and then went home like laughing hyenas. We played at home a while to get the wiggles out, and then off to bed. We hoped (prayed) that the slightly later bed time would lead to at least one of them sleeping a bit later in the morning. At 5:30 am in the morning when Zoe joined us in bed, I realized that she had not made the same New Years resolution.

Happy, Happy New Year little people. Perhaps we've started on to a New Years family tradition.

PS: Wardrobe: Scott - hat, bow tie, ruffled shirt with cuff links. Laurie - hat, scarfs, pants with silver thread in them and boots. Zoe - tiara, princess dress, necklace and bracelet. Mia - tiara, fun shirt and pants, flapper skirt, necklace and bracelet.
